Reading Set to Shine as Christmas Light Switch-On Launches the Festive Season in the Town Centre
4th November 2026
The countdown to Christmas in Reading begins this month as the town centre's annual Christmas Light Switch-On returns to Broad Street, officially launching the festive season and kicking off a packed calendar of Christmas events and activities in the town centre.
Taking place in Broad Street on Saturday 14 November, the free event will bring festive cheer to the heart of Reading, with live entertainment, festive performers and family-friendly activities creating a vibrant atmosphere as the town centre transforms for Christmas.
The Christmas Light Switch-On will also mark the opening of Reading's annual Christmas Market, returning for the 2026 festive season bigger than ever before. This year, the market expands with four additional stalls, including a new bar at the western end of Broad Street. With over 20 festive cabins and market stalls lining the town centre, visitors can enjoy plenty of seasonal food and drink, festive treats and unique gifts, making it the perfect place to soak up the Christmas atmosphere before and after the lights are switched on.
Visitors can also enjoy a programme of entertainment throughout the afternoon, with music and performances from midday, including Danny Mountain, RASPO and Pete Doyle & Dionne. The highlight will be the official light switch-on, led by members of the Reading FC Women's Team, inviting visitors and the wider community to come together for the big countdown to the beginning of the festive season.
Alexa Volker, Reading BID Manager commented: "The Christmas Light Switch-On is one of the highlights of the year and marks the start of the festive season in Reading. It's always wonderful to see the town centre come alive with visitors, families and local businesses coming together to celebrate.
"We look forward to welcoming people into Reading to enjoy everything the town centre has to offer this Christmas, from fantastic shopping and festive food and drink to seasonal events, entertainment and experiences. Whether you're visiting for a day out, Christmas shopping or to celebrate with friends and family, there's something for everyone to enjoy."
The event marks the first in a series of festive activities taking place across Reading in the run-up to Christmas, offering residents and visitors plenty of reasons to enjoy the town centre, support local businesses and soak up the seasonal atmosphere.
