12th March 2026
Strong productivity and exceptional job availability place Reading in the UK's top 15 business locations, according to a new study by CoworkingCafe. Their report into Britain’s most economically effective cities ranks Reading 11th for economic performance.
The analysis examines how efficiently local economies convert work into economic value. The ranking combines five key indicators: labour productivity (gross value added per hour worked), employment rate, average weekly hours worked, job density and business density. Together, these metrics identify where work is not just plentiful, but also economically effective.

Reading: A High-Productivity Employment Hub
Reading stands out nationally for its strong productivity and exceptional job availability:
• 9th highest labour productivity nationally: £48.5 GVA per hour
• 8th highest job density: 1.12 jobs per working-age resident
• High employment rate: 82.4%
• Average workweek: 38.1 hours
• 528 businesses per 10,000 working-age residents
The report says that Reading’s productivity places it firmly among Britain’s top-tier mid-sized economies, reflecting its concentration of high-value sectors including technology, telecoms, finance and professional services. As part of the wider Thames Valley knowledge economy, the city has built a strong base of nationally and internationally significant employers.
At the same time, Reading is one of the UK’s strongest job markets relative to its population. With more than one job per working-age resident, the city acts as a net importer of labour force, drawing workers from surrounding areas and reinforcing its role as a major regional employment hub.Its high employment rate further underlines strong workforce engagement, supporting a balanced and resilient local economy.
