The University has 23,000 students and supplies highly skilled graduates to the local and regional economy, with 22% of graduates remaining to work in the Reading area after finishing their course, and the majority contributing to the growth of the regional economy. More than 80% of its graduates go on to work in managerial and professional occupations. Around 1 in every 27 jobs in the whole of Reading and Wokingham can be traced back to the University. Many of the sectors in which graduates are working are highly skilled, knowledge-intensive sectors, such as legal and accounting activities, computer programming and consultancy, financial services, architectural and engineering, and advertising and market research.
At a local level, the University makes a significant contribution to pipeline of new talent in key economic sectors, including in the ICT sector and with primary and secondary schools. The University’s Institute of Education plays an important role through its strong relationships with schools in the area.
