Reading Business Improvement District (BID) and Reading Borough Council have introduced a new Busking and Street Performance Guide to foster a positive and thriving street culture in the town centre. The guide aims to ensure that live performances continue to enhance the town’s vibrancy while respecting the needs of local businesses, residents, and visitors.
Busking has long been a valued tradition in Reading, bringing music, art, and theatre to public spaces. However, occasional concerns around noise levels, repetitive performances, and obstruction have led to the need for clearer guidance. The new Busking Guide provides practical advice for performers, businesses, and the public, outlining expectations for volume control, location selection, and respectful engagement with others in shared spaces.
The guide encourages mutual cooperation between street performers and those who live and work in Reading. It offers recommendations on choosing appropriate performance spots, avoiding disturbances, and resolving disputes amicably. Businesses and residents are advised on how to communicate concerns constructively, and performers are encouraged to be mindful of their surroundings to ensure their acts remain engaging and welcome.
Reading BID wardens and the Council will also carry out periodic spot checks to help ensure that the guidelines are followed, maintaining a balance between the energy of street entertainment and the daily life of the town centre.
