Building Inclusive Workplaces: Is Your Business Ready to Lead?
13th June 2025
As part of the government’s 'Get Britain Working' initiative, a new employment support system is being introduced—one that’s tailored to the unique needs of local communities. This approach is not only designed to help individuals find work but is also central to the government's ambition of achieving an 80% employment rate and driving sustainable economic growth.
Connect to Work is one of the key programmes underpinning this mission. It aims to support disabled people, those with health conditions, and individuals with complex barriers to employment into sustainable, meaningful work. During 2026–27, the programme will help approximately 100,000 people across England and Wales into jobs.
Did you know that by providing a flexible and inclusive workplace you can:
- Reduce recruitment costs and increase staff retention
- Boost staff morale and employee engagement
- Tap into alternative markets (like the £274bn ‘Purple Pound’)
- Deliver on your corporate social responsibility goals
Locally, REDA is working with Reading Borough Council and other Berkshire authorities to identify businesses willing to champion this programme. We're looking for Reading-based employers who can shape inclusive, entry-level job opportunities—roles that do not require formal trade or vocational qualifications and are accessible to those with limited experience or education.
This is an opportunity for businesses to:
- Help address local labour shortages
- Build a future talent pipeline
- Contribute to economic growth in Berkshire
The Connect to Work programme will ensure candidates are work-ready and that employers are fully supported throughout the recruitment process. We’ll be working closely with the DWP, health services, and businesses to ensure these placements are successful.
How You Can Help
We’re inviting employers to:
- Share your views on inclusive recruitment and local employment needs
- Consider becoming a Connect to Work Champion by offering suitable opportunities for jobseekers facing barriers
Please take 10–15 minutes to complete a short survey. Your responses will help shape the Connect to Work programme and inform wider business and economic growth efforts across Berkshire.
