Reading’s Indie Gems: Spotlight on Crunch Comics
31st March 2025
Although Reading is better known for its larger chains and bustling shopping centre The Oracle, our town centre has become a hub for independent stores catering to the interests of our residents and beyond, from board games to hats and records.
Cornerstone of Reading’s Geek Culture
Tucked away in Harris Arcade is Crunch Comics, an independent that has built on the geek-friendly foundation laid by stores such as Eclectic Games, becoming the cornerstone of geek culture in Reading. With comic stores on the decline and the next closest thing in Basingstoke, Crunch Comics has become a fan favourite throughout Berkshire and beyond.
For over eight years, this comic shop has been a community hub where fans of all ages gather to share their love of the storytelling medium. Step inside, and you’ll find everything a collector could want—figures, Pop! Vinyls, Pokémon TCG cards, and comic storage solutions. But what truly sets Crunch Comics apart is its dedication to what matters most: an ever-refreshing selection of newly released comics and a treasure trove of rare back issues.
For comic lovers, run by comic lovers
The staff’s passion for comics runs deep, making this a store for comic lovers, run by comic lovers. As owner Brian puts it, "I've loved comics since I was a child, so opening a comic book store was always the dream." Together with Assistant Manager Bryce, they go above and beyond, building relationships with their customers so that they’re able to anticipate what they might want before they even know it themselves, recommending titles that aren’t just trendy but will take readers deeper into the world of comics.

Regular social events help to set Crunch Comics apart from other stores—it’s even played matchmaker, bringing together two customers who realised they had all the same interests and are now great friends, going to breakfast and Comic-Con together. Even to visitors and international students who have made Crunch their go-to for the time they’re in Reading, it’s a temporary but meaningful stop.
An offer of best-selling comics and hidden gems
Crunch Comics offers everything from mainstream titles like Batman and Spider-Man to lesser-known but fantastically written indie comics. Lately, one unexpected title has been flying off the shelves. "Transformers is huge for us right now... it’s our best-selling indie title," says Bryce. "I think a lot of people don’t realise that some of their favourite movies actually started as comics." That insider knowledge is what makes comic shops special - fans here are the first to discover the next big thing.
When asked for a personal favourite, Brian skips the usual superhero picks and instead recommends Calvin and Hobbes, the beloved comic strip about a mischievous boy and his stuffed tiger, who comes to life - for Calvin at least. "It’s absolutely brilliant, but a lot of people haven’t yet heard of it," he says.
Artist signings
Brian’s store brings more than just the comics to the people of Reading, hosting signings with top-tier artists like Martin Simmonds (Department of Truth) and Paul Fry (Spider-Man, Star Wars). "Martin does amazing remarks, little drawings that make each signed comic unique. Some artists do them in two minutes - he spends about fifteen making a detailed piece of art." Paul Fry’s signings have also been a hit, especially with his work on Night of the Slashers.
What’s next for the store?
As a shop, Crunch Comics has grown with its customers, moving to a larger store as regulars who were five foot are now towering over them. The store is now levelling up by adding CGC grading services to its offerings. “We’ll personally hand-deliver your comic for grading,” says Brian. “Collectors are split on how they best enjoy their comics, some love to read and enjoy them, but this is for those who are keen to preserve them.”
Every first Saturday in May, the store holds Free Comic Book Day where each year, there are up to 30 different comics available for customers to choose to take home. Whether you’re a lifelong comic fan, just getting started or even still making up your mind, Crunch Comics welcomes you with open arms. Step inside, chat with the friendly staff, discover your next great read, and become part of a passionate, welcoming community.
