The Best Independent Coffee Shops in Reading
11th November 2025
When the mornings turn crisp and the leaves crunch underfoot, Reading’s independent coffee shops come into their own. From cosy corners to artisan pastries, the town’s cafe scene is like a warm hug in a mug. These independent spots promise top-notch coffee, the tastiest cakes and pastries (for when you need that little sweet treat) and the perfect vibe for a lazy autumn afternoon.
The Collective
Step into The Collective in Caversham and you’ll instantly feel the charm. Part cafe, part lifestyle store, it’s all about simple things done well. Great coffee meets great ingredients (their pastel de nata changed me for the better) and their cosy interior makes it impossible not to linger.

Picnic
Right in the heart of Reading, Picnic has been serving customers since 2007 with Fairtrade coffee, hot chocolate and ethically sourced teas. Enjoy breakfast cereals, freshly made sandwiches, Picnic Box salads and award-winning soups from the Dorset Blue Soup Company. To top it off, they serve organic ice cream and home-baked cakes too!

Spill
Spill in Caversham is a beautifully quirky cafe that transforms as the day goes on. During the morning and afternoon, it’s a bright spot for specialty coffee and fresh focaccia. In the evening, it turns into a relaxed wine and cocktail bar, perfect for crashing after a mellow autumn shop around Caversham’s independents!

YayLo
For those who love gluten-free treats, YayLo is a must-visit. Everything on the menu, from quiches to cakes to sandwiches, is handmade on site and completely gluten-free. This cheerful cafe is bright and perfect for brunch or afternoon tea. Autumn afternoons feel extra cosy here, with the warmth of the interior matching the delicious, worry-free menu.

Shed Cafe
Shed Cafe in the town centre keeps things fun and delicious. Located in an old forge with exposed brick, this family-run cafe is the definition of local charm. Sourdough toasties and doorstop sandwiches (made to order!) make it an irresistible stop for a relaxed lunch. The friendly staff and unpretentious interior make it easy to feel at home.

Yolk
Yolk, and its Baby Yolk variant, has been serving award-winning brunch and breakfast dishes in Reading since 2013. From breakfast burgers to sweet treats, it’s a bright, bustling cafe that’s dog-friendly and perfect for autumn mornings. With a lively but welcoming atmosphere, Yolk is ideal for those who want to linger over a long brunch.

Fidget & Bob
Over at Kennet Island, Fidget & Bob is the place to go for fresh brunch options, especially their famous slow-cooked scrambled eggs. Indoor and outdoor seating (+ gluten-free options!) make it cosy and versatile.

Coffee Under Pressure
C.U.P. is one for the coffee aficionados. With two sites in Reading town centre, you’re never too far away to fall in love with this one. The cafe on Blagrave Street is only 1 minute from the station, whilst the St Mary’s Butts location is the other side of town, with its own private outside space. Right next to the tree-covered churchyard, it catches most of the sunshine throughout the day.

Filter Coffee House
Filter Coffee House on Castle Street blends the warmth of South India with Reading’s indie cafe culture. Founder Mac’s signature Filter Kaapi, an 80:20 coffee-to-chicory blend, delivers rich, bold flavour, while their spiced masala chai balances Assam tea with cardamom, cinnamon and ginger.

Lincoln Coffee House
Lincoln Coffee House on King’s Road is all about great-tasting coffee that does good, too. Family-founded by Jas and Simmi, this Reading favourite sources ethically grown beans from Brazil, Colombia and India, paying above Fairtrade prices to support farmers and sustainability. With their own roastery and years of expertise, Lincoln serves some rich, speciality brews.

The Pantry
Tucked inside Reading Town Hall beside Reading Museum, The Pantry Cafe & Kitchen is a bright and affordable family-friendly spot, perfect for a relaxed lunch or catch-up. Expect fresh sandwiches, soups and homemade cakes, plus hot specials served daily. And don’t miss their afternoon tea!
A great cafe isn’t just about the drink, it’s about the atmosphere and warmth that makes every visit memorable - and Reading’s independent coffee scene does just that. So grab a scarf, try somewhere new and let Reading’s coffee scene make your autumn mornings and afternoons a little brighter.
