Occuity, founded in 2019, is pioneering a new approach to healthcare—developing cutting-edge medical devices that detect and monitor disease simply by looking into the eye. As the company continues to grow, so does its team of young engineers, many of whom have relocated to Reading to be part of the journey.

At Occuity, engineers play a vital role in bringing innovative products to life. “A lot of what I do involves getting hands-on—building prototypes, running computer-aided design work, and helping get our final product ready for the market,” one engineer shared. The work is both creative and technical, offering meaningful opportunities for professional development right from the start.

Reading’s location and quality of life have been central to the company’s ability to attract emerging talent. One team member, previously based in London during university, made the decision to relocate after commuting became unsustainable. “I was spending an hour and a half getting to work—now it takes me five minutes,” they said. The move made a huge difference to their work-life balance and overall wellbeing.

Another engineer was living in Sheffield when they discovered Occuity. “I was looking for jobs across the country in sports and healthcare—anything human-related really—and Occuity really stood out as a great company. I went through the interview process, made the move to Reading, and I’ve never looked back.”

The company is based in The Blade, one of Reading’s most prominent office buildings, just a short walk from both the town centre and the train station. Employees enjoy easy commutes, city amenities, and relaxing green spaces such as Forbury Gardens—popular for lunch breaks with colleagues.

Living and working in Reading has made it easier for the team to strike a healthy work-life balance. “I walk to work in about 30 minutes—no traffic, no long commute—and once I’m in, everything I need is here,” one employee explained. “We’ve got a great team and we’re working on some really exciting technology.”

Reading is becoming increasingly attractive for engineers looking to start their careers outside of London. “For hands-on engineering, London isn’t always the best place. Reading offers more practical opportunities, and we’re seeing more of our workforce relocating here for that reason.”
